A Wedding Toast

It was many years ago, when Brian and Melyssa first met;
They didn’t knew it then, but their fate had been set.
In their summers they worked at Kittatinny Canoes;
Watching their customers go on a Delaware River Cruise.
Over the years, in those summers they became quite good friends;
In the winters they would write about the good times that had been.
Right after their graduations from college had passed;
Would be the last summer they would haul those dreaded rafts.
With their friends every night they would have such great fun;
They enjoyed those summer days, you know they didn’t waste one.
Kayaking the Mongaup between trips to the beach;
Concerts and road trips were had by them each.

Halfway through that summer, and this is the key;
For the 4th of July, by the river they’d be.
With fireworks above, and more down below;
That was the night we saw Brian and Melyssa’s friendship grow.
They saw in each other something that wasn’t there before;
What they saw was true love, we all knew it for sure.
For the rest of that summer, their love grew to be strong;
So when Melyssa’s time to move came, you knew Brian’s wouldn’t be long.

The rest is history, as you all know it to be;
They’ve worked in the District of Columbia since 1993.
Lobbying for non-profits, and still having fun;
As they did all those summers, working out in the sun.

Having been through "remember when", and "once upon a time";
It’s time to move on to the "happily ever after" part of this rhyme.
We are here today to celebrate the love;
Between the two best friends that saw those fireworks far above.
May their happiness together last until the end of time;
And with each other, may it always be summertime.
A toast to the bride and groom, and good tidings we bid;
And may you both live long enough to party with your kids!
